Galledia Regionalmedien AG is part of the galledia group, the largest independent media company in Eastern Switzerland, headquartered in Berneck SG. With around 400 employees, the company provides daily coverage of current events – in print, digital, and regional formats. In the St. Gallen Rhine Valley, Galledia publishes three daily newspapers – Der Rheintaler, Rheintalische Volkszeitung, and Werdenberger & Obertoggenburger – appearing from Monday to Saturday. On Fridays, the titles reach more than 100,000 people through large-scale distribution in the Rhine Valley, Werdenberg, the Appenzeller Vorderland, and the Toggenburg region. As a regionally rooted media house, Galledia combines traditional local journalism with digital innovation: through news platforms such as rheintaler.ch and wundo.ch, readers can access content online as well as in print. The management places strong emphasis on continuously expanding its digital news offerings.

Schweizer Galledia Regionalmedien AG in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley is the editor of several daily newspapers and provides readers with independent and daily updates on events in the region. The Two Daily Newspapers Rhine Valley and Werdenberger and Obertoggenburger (W&O) Is published six days a week, and the even more extensive weekend edition is published on Friday. The content is available to readers both on the web via the respective news platform and in the two news apps. Both daily newspapers have more than 150 years of tradition in news production.

Prior to working with Purple, the media company was confronted with several challenges: The e-papers available on the websites of the daily newspapers offered no reading comfort as a PDF version. With Purple's e-paper app, Galledia Regional Media meets readership needs, increases reader loyalty in the long term and wants to appeal to a wider audience at the same time. These include both print readers who are switching to the new digital format and classic newspaper readers who appreciate the layouted, completed format of the e-paper. By integrating Purple's e-paper apps, the publisher has a clear advantage over other journalistic offerings — and encourages subscriptions.

Convenient reading in the e-paper app

With Purple's e-paper app, newspapers offer Rhine Valley and Werdenberger and Obertoggenburger An improved user experience for their readers. In the app overview, readers can find both the current edition of the e-paper as well as already published issues in the integrated digital archive. Using the archive's search function, readers can display various topics or search terms with page information in the issues that have already been published.

The bookmark function of the e-paper app also helps to improve the user experience. Readers can thus easily create a wish list and quickly access the selected content at a later date.

An indispensable function of the Purple app is the reading mode. This makes using the e-paper much more intuitive and convenient than before. After opening the desired issue, readers can access the individual pages via the table of contents and switch between the PDF magazine and reading mode by tapping on the desired article. This function offers an optimized article view, adapted to the reader's digital device. Articles can be read in either portrait or landscape format, thanks to the app's responsive design.

Just like in a printed newspaper, readers scroll from left to right instead of scrolling through a PDF. The large display of the articles improves the reading experience, the font size can be individually adjusted using a slider and is particularly beneficial for older readers or people with visual impairment. The option for readers to switch between day and night mode is particularly easy on the eyes and ensures a pleasant display even in different lighting conditions. Readers can take a closer look at the images in the edition by tapping on them.
