Simon's Journey from Working Student to Software Developer at Purple

I would like to introduce you to Simon Binder, who has embarked on an impressive career path at Purple. During his master's degree in media informatics, he applied to us six years ago. He signed his working student contract at the beginning of 2019 and has been an indispensable part of our team ever since. Hip hip hooray, Simon!

Simons Weg vom Werkstudenten zum Softwareentwickler bei Purple

What prompted you to start working at Purple and what surprised you the most?

I started as a working student at Purple in February 2019 when I was just new to Berlin. During my media informatics studies, I was looking for companies that could inspire me both professionally and in terms of content. I've always found journalism, media and AI topics exciting. That's how I came across Purple and immediately applied. The start went smoothly because the working environment and the people here are very open and friendly.

Purple accompanied me through my studies and I even wrote my master's thesis here. I've been a permanent employee for three and a half years. The great atmosphere and friendly environment impressed me from day one.

What memories do you have of your first project?

That was the Autonomous Content Management (ACM) project. I was particularly fascinated by the aspects of AI, especially everything related to text analysis and keyword searches — that's when my time at purple began.

What is the most exciting project or challenge you've worked on here?

Switching from WordPress to a headless CMS was definitely a milestone — and the topic of my master's thesis. Shortly after, we converted the systems. The biggest project was probably Hamburger Morgenpost, where I was able to cover many areas both in the frontend and in the backend.

What do you particularly appreciate about our corporate culture?

I love the open culture here. The team is well-rehearsed and reliable. I also appreciate working from home, weekly lunches, breakfast and our team events. Overall, the collaboration is very positive.

If you had to give a new colleague a tip to get started, what would it be?

There are many exciting topics to discover at Purple. If you want to experience journalism from a different perspective or make a difference, this is the right place for you. Working with various editorial offices is interesting, and the team and the open culture are simply great.
